Graduation at NIST

NIST celebrated its 23rd graduation on Saturday, June 9. The commencement speaker was Tokunboh Adeyemo, who has written several books and is one of the most well-known evangelical African theologians. It was a very nice ceremony, and though 2-3 hours long, it really didn't seem so. There were about 30 total graduates and nearly 500 family and friends attending to watch. These sort of ceremonies and special ways of dressing seem to be very important here.

Four of my students graduated from the diploma program. I also knew several more students through interacting during wakati ya chai (tea-time) and lunch.

The four students on the right with blue on their robes were students of mine.

I didn't get many good photos, because the lecturers were seated behind the podium. So we mostly had views of everyone's backsides. Fortunately, my students were sitting in the front row.

Jordan Cleans His Room

Jessica arrives tonight and she'll sleep in Jordan's room for the first week she is here. Jordan went to Camp Brackenhurst for the week. So for the second time since we came to Kenya, 9-10 months ago, Jordan cleaned his room. Here is a picture that Jordan took while in process.

Gray Season Begins

When we were living in Djibouti, we joked about the hot season, the hotter season and the really, really hot season. Here in Nairobi the seasonal changes are very different. We have two rainy seasons - one supposedly shorter and less rainy than the other - though we couldn't tell you which is which after this year. In between the rainy seasons, and often between rains, it is usually beautiful, warm and sunny - never too hot, nor too cold. However, now we are entering the 2-3 month Gray Season when the sun only appears sporadically, rain is a light drizzle, and it is constantly cold. This is the time of the year when we used to visit Kenya from Djibouti. Our memories of Nairobi from that time were sitting around a fireplace trying to keep warm. Now we live here, and there is no fireplace!
